Relation between Serum Ceruloplasmin Concentration and Liver Function

Abstract
This study was intended to observe the relation between serum ceruloplasmin concentration and liver function. The author determined serum ceruloplasmin concentration by Ravin¢¥s modified method and checked liver function by routine laboratory technics in normal adults and adult patients who visited the clinical laboratory for evaluation of their liver function. The data were analyzed and the following conclusions were obtained.
1. The mean and standard deviation of ;serum ceruloplasmin concentration of normal adults in Korea are 30.33mg/100ml and 5.0lmg/100ml approximately.
2. The mean serum ceruloplasmin concentration of the patients with acute liver cell damage is slightly above the normal level, that of the patients with chronic liver cell damage is lower than the normal level, especially marked in the patients with liver cirrhosis, and that of the patients with jaundice is not remarkable.
3. In the patients with liver damage decrease of serum albumin and alpha 2 globulin, positivity of thymol turbidity test and cephalin-cholesterol-flocculation test and increased activity of SGOT and SGPT are related to the decrease of serum ceruloplasmin concentration, but increase of globulin, especially gamma globulin, and bilirubin are related to the increase of serum ceruloplasmin concentration.
4. The serum ceruloplasmin level of patients with liver damage seems to be influenced not only by the synthetic function of albumin and alpha 2 globulin in the liver, but also by the synthetic function of globulin, especially gamma globulin, in other tissues and by abnormal metabolism of estrogen.
